QA-403 power readings off by 6db

Hi @emc.audioreserch. I don’t know if this will help you, but if you ran the test using GEN1 and took the signal from Gen1 in differential mode, it is correct that there is an increase in the reading of +6dB compared to what is indicated and set on Gen1. I am attaching two screenshots of my system using this mode and, as you can see, there is a gain of +6dB, as it should be. On the other hand, you can easily verify the doubling of the voltage in differential mode with a DVM at the differential output of GEN1. I hope this is helpful.

Thank you for your feedback! It confirms my thoughts.

The unit cannot differentiate between single-ended and differential connections. It should be able to let us choose which type of connection we want to use single-ended or differential. Unity gain should be achievable between a single-ended output and a differential input.

I don’t think it’s the case here, but many people believe that a differential receiver should increase the amplitude by 6 dB. This is incorrect. The differential voltage between the signals should be exactly the same as that of the single-ended signal. The key difference is that a differential signal doesn’t use ground as a reference. So, the amplitude between, say, hot and cold should be the same as between signal and ground in a single-ended driver.

Hi @emc.audioserch. There is a way to tell the system that it is using differential mode. In the context menu of the “dBV” button, select “External gain” and set “Output Gain (dB)” to 6.02dB. Doing this will display what you are asking for in the “Tiles.” I think the screenshot clarifies everything.

I can not set the compensation. It appears this message.

Okay, I got it!
But if I press the +6.02 dB button, it gives me an error… I need to type it with a comma: 6,02 otherwise, it won’t accept its own suggested value. This is definitely a bug.

Thanks for the tip! Even though this gain compensation works, it’s not the best practice.

Thank you once again, Claudio

Ciao!

I even tried with the two latest software version.you can check on the screenshot.

Hi. Yes, it’s a bug. I’ve already reported it in the past. The problem occurs in European operating systems that use a comma instead of a period to indicate decimals. You have to type it directly and not use the button.
