After some issues with various hubs and USB A to C cables, I decided to try a USB C to B cable. I searched for and did not see a mention in the forum of using a USB C to B cable. I got this one:

The results directly connected to a laptop and using a hub were always good, always above 4.9V. The performance (shown balanced measurements) seems to be about the same as the original cable on a USB A connector.
